What's awful?

by ksanford on Nov.22, 2009, under

Personally, I think the concerns about violence and blood/gore are smokescreens for what are much more horrific aspects of today's life, like ignoring people who are in desperate trouble, homeless, victims of abuse, who get no support and who regularly feel like failures. I think these things are awful. Also, there seems to be a hypocricy in relation to what is determined to be awful (such as violent videogames) and the real life that surrounds us all the time, such as competitive sport, making guns to sell to other countries, sending young people off to war, exploiting the weak. In real life, there is extreme violence everywhere, and perhaps we should spend more time trying to reduce that than in deflecting attention from what we live everyday, and focus on how people's lives can be improved.

I agree that the way we view "awful" things changes as we come to learn more about them, some things become less awful and some things become more so.

That's it for now, Kathy

    Interesting comment.

I agree with how people in real life do awful things, and if real life was a video game, I would probably call most of it "awful", and avoid playing it, but alas! I live! I just must choose to avoid bring more "awful" into my "Mature" rated world.

I agree to, real life is awful but that doesn’t stop it from happening, the general public are oblivious to the fact that people all around the world are dying every day and I think once that is brought out into the light, I think the world will be better off... As for video-games, the things you see in them are hardly "awful" when you compare it to real life. I think the worst (awful) game to come out in a while would be Resident Evil 4...

Here is a posting from Family Medias Guide...

Resident Evil 4--"Player is a Special Forces agent sent to recover the President's kidnapped daughter. During the first minutes of play, it's possible to find the corpse of a woman pinned up on a wall--by a pitchfork through her face."

    Nice Eh?

Or Maybe Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the most violent game?
Here is another posting from Family Media Guide...

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas--"Player is a young man working with gangs to gain respect. His mission includes murder, theft, and destruction on every imaginable level. Player recovers his health by visiting prostitutes then recovers funds by beating them to death and taking their money. Player can wreak as much havoc as he likes without progressing through the game's storyline."

    Even Nicer! (Not)

Those postings make you think, why would this amuse people? Why would cold blooded murder, rape, and total destruction be amusing?

Just some thoughts... Not everyone may agree with what I said just now but to be honest, you can’t really argue with it...

As I said, bringing more evil into your life voluntarily is worthless and impeding to progression. Also, I'm pretty sure that finding a women with a pitchfork through her head is a little worse than average life.
