What's awful?
by Leanna on Nov.22, 2009, under
Alright I'm still thinking about what is awful and what is not awful (inappropriate)?
Michelle asked - has your definition of 'awful' changed over time?
I'm also wondering if does 'awful' change when you consider different ages of kids and how do we know what they are capable of viewing or playing?

My definition of awful has shifted, especially after I have studied more about how people play video games - I don't think everyone is passive, just accepting everything on the screen as the real thing - most players know it is just a game. But if I had to pin down what I thought was 'awful' I might choose to use the game The Warriors as an example - there is a lot of swearing used in massive anger and the back story doesn't support the hand to hand beatings that take place between the gangs - I guess this relates back to the realism again - I don't think it is realistic enough to support why the video game player needs to have the avatars fight each other. In other words, the beatings are senseless violence in my opinion.
I would love to hear what more of you think about what is awful or not awful in your opinion?

When you asked that before, I had a hard time figuring out what I thought, but I suppose I think a game that is awful is a game where there is excessive swearing or violence. Swears are used too often in games, I don't think they help them at all, and I find them offensive.
Excessive violence may include large amounts of gore, killing without feeling, (especially if you see their face) or crude slaughtering / disabling methods. (like sawing apart your victim limb from limb, ripping off their head, biting their eyes out, etc.)
