Final Fantasy : Dissidia - Cloud VS Warrior of Light

by Sean on Nov.22, 2009, under

This has got to be the best game made for PSP yet. If you havent imported it from japan or downloaded it, I highly suggest you do despite it being not very import friendly. It has got the best combat ive ever seen in a fighting game like this. Sure blows street fighter out of the water in my opininon. This is just a small clip of the content which was put together in an awesome editor built into the game. Not only that but it can also converts the replays into *.avi format so you can post your fights online, just like I have. Final Fanasy : Dissidia.

Tell me what "the best combat" means... is it in terms of the graphics? being believable? being more violent (for lack of better words)? Now I'm really curious.... ;)

AND, I just watched the clip on your youtube (it wouldn't work for me on the blog link), and it's in a different language. Did you get it in a different language? Does it matter? Does the best combat outweigh the correct language? or was it just a sample for us to see...

Well when I say its the best combat system, its just lots of fun to play compared to other games of its type. For instance, the arcade game Street Fighter is a 1 on 1 fighting game, just like this except it's 2D. The way you would play is by holding an analog stick in a certain direction and pressing certain combinations of buttons to do specific combos and moves. With this game, it gives you much more freedom in terms of moving around and the kinds of moves you can do. As you level up one of the characters, they gain new abilities and techniques which you can equip in a menu and set to certain presses of buttons, or they enhance said abilities. Its just a refreshing perspective on the fighting genre of games. As for the language thing, it really doesnt matter to me all that much. The game has its parts that are hard to learn because of the language barrier, but stick with it long enough and you manage to piece things together. Fortunately, when making games the Japanese like to use english keywords for specific things so you can get a hint of what they mean from time to time. I would very much prefer to play this in English, but unfortunately its release date is for next year. Its just that japan has a much larger fanbase of the Final Fantasy series of games than here in Canada and the US. The video I posted was just for showing you what the combat is like ingame.

I've hardly ever played a real FF game, I've only ever gotten my hands on FF3(DS). I really hated that. This game looks pretty interesting it also looks like it might take a while to get the hang of? Or is it one of those where you can just mash buttons to own a NPC? I really love games based around combat. Soul Calibur 4 I though was purely amazing.

OK Noah and Sean... I am so naive sometimes about these things... but tell me: What is the appeal of combat? I understood when you said, Sean, about the skill it takes to put combinations of moves together and to figure out how to be agile and quick with your buttons, combos, etc. But there are so many combat games and I wonder what the appeal is. I know, I know, how annoying I am to be asking this question. But just tell me, are there any other types of games that would have the same satisfaction or effect??

When you're playing a game like FF, or any combat game, do you take on the role of the character? Do you pay attention to the music and the ways it shifts the mood? What are you thinking when you are engaging in combat? Is your thinking or experiencing different in a game like this than in a movie, for example Kill Bill, or other combat movies?
